Studying at University in England

England, home to Oxford and Cambridge universities, two of the most famous universities in the world, has a university education system that dates back to centuries and has a well-deserved reputation. Studying at a university that is taught in English, which is accepted as a universal language, and is valid all over the world, enables you to open doors much easier and with better conditions in business life, and this is valid not only for Turkey but all over the world.

England’s University Education System

There are HND Foundation, Undergraduate, Master’s and Postgraduate programs in the UK.

To detail these programs;

Foundation degree: These are programs similar to associate degree programs in Turkey and generally last 2 years (some programs last 1 year). When this type of program is chosen, it is possible to receive training on many different programs such as computer programming, design, and business administration. If a student who receives a Foundation degree wishes, he or she can continue his or her undergraduate education with a practice similar to the vertical transfer practice in Turkey. A student who receives an associate degree can obtain a bachelor’s degree by studying for 1 more year.

Students who want to study at undergraduate level in the UK and have completed high school in Turkey must first obtain a foundation degree.

Undergraduate Degree: Unlike many parts of the world, undergraduate education in the UK generally takes 3 years. In this way, it is possible to obtain a bachelor’s degree at an earlier age. Applicants who will apply from Turkey must graduate from a high school that provides education according to the British education system (there are very few in Turkey, but they are available in Turkey) or complete an associate degree (foundation) in the UK and get a score of 6.0 or better from IELTS.

The authorized institution for applying to undergraduate programs in the UK is the government organization called UCAS (The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). The application is made to UCAS and applications can be made to 5 different universities at the same time. In this way, if any of the universities gives a negative response, application to another can be made.

Master’s Education: Master’s education, which usually lasts 1 year, has 2 different types of education. The first of these is carried out in a classroom environment and through lectures, while the other has a discussion-based form of education. The prerequisite for getting a master’s degree is a grade point average.

Pre-master’s education is available for students who do not have sufficient success points when applying for a master’s degree. By participating in this program, it is possible to apply for a master’s degree only by taking certain courses and with the average success achieved.

Another problem that may be encountered in applying for a master’s degree may be the insufficient language score. In this case, the prospective student may choose to study in English preparatory classes at universities and, if successful, may be exempt from exams such as IELTS or TOEFL.

Doctoral Education: Doctoral programs, which can be entered after a very challenging process, last 3 years. In doctoral programs that are entirely research-oriented, no classes are taught and the responsibility lies entirely with the student. Unlike the methods of applying for other types of education, applications for a doctorate start with the process of convincing the lecturers at the university, and if the lecturers are convinced, the official application process begins.

What are the Requirements for Applying for University Education in the UK?

While each university may have different and unique application criteria, there are also some common criteria. If we look at these criteria;

  • Having received an A-Level diploma or foundation education
  • Having a sufficient score from an exam such as IELTS or TOEFL
  • Having a diploma grade at the desired level
  • Resume and letter of intent
  • Reference letters from teachers trained at previous school
  • Accommodation During University Education

The most preferred accommodation method by foreign students is university dormitories. Dormitories, which have different room options, provide security, motivation and advantages that make life easier for students due to their location on campus. While some rooms have a toilet and a bathroom, some rooms also have a kitchen and provide the student with all the amenities of a home environment.
